Has the screen on your iPhone or iPad gone blank, leaving you unable to access anything? Your first thought will probably be to take it straight to an apple store and have it repaired but there are a few things you can try first. There are any number of reasons why this might happen so work your way through our list of solutions first. Not all of these will work for all devices so start at the top and work your way through the list in order.
Switch on or Restart:
The obvious place to start is in making sure your device hasn’t just switched itself off. Hold the power button down for a few seconds; you should see the Apple logo, at which point you can release the button and leave it to boot up on its own. If the Turn Off slier appears, slide to turn it off and leave it to reboot. If you don’t see the logo or the slider, try the next solution.
Hold the power and the home button down together. Hold for at least 10 seconds and the Apple logo should appear. If it hasn’t appeared after about 30 seconds, try the next solution. Proximity Sensor:
Sometimes the sensor goes wrong and results in the screen shutting down:
- Reboot your iPhone or iPad
- Go to Settings and open General > Reset
- Tap on Reset all Settings
- Confirm your decision and leave your iPhone to reboot
Try Charging Your Device:
iPhone and iPad batteries have a setting in them that allows them to shut down when the battery drops under a certain percentage – this is to safeguard your data and all your Settings:
- Plug your iPhone or iPad in and leave it to charge fully. If the indicator is red, the battery was too low and likely shut the device down
- If this doesn’t solve the problem, try again but with a different charger just to make sure yours isn’t faulty.
- Do check the charging port on the device and make sure it isn’t full of dirt, dust and other debris that can interfere with the charging capabilities.
Restore Your Device:
This really is a last resort but it might just be the only thing that works. Obviously, everything on your device will be lost but you should have been making regular backups anyway:
- Connect your cable to your iPhone or iPad and press on the Home button
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC or Mac and open iTunes
- You will see a message that tells you a Device in Recovery has been detected; click on the Restore button
If your iPhone or iPad starts up but fails to boot, you need to reset it:
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC or Mac and launch iTunes
- Press the Power and Home buttons on the device don for about 10 seconds then release the power button
- Continue to hold the home button down until you see the iTunes message telling you a Device in Recovery is detected
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the iPhone or iPad
If none of these work then you really are left with just one option – take your device in for repair.
